A five-octave replica fortepiano, with walnut case and lid, ebony and (recycled) ivory keys. One of a small batch of fortepianos made in the Finchcocks workshop of Adlam Burnett, this is their interpretation of the historic Mattheas Heilmann instrument from the Colt Collection. It has a fine quality European spruce soundboard, a Viennese action (brass Kapseln) with leather covered, pearwood hammers. There are two knee levers: the left operates the Moderator stop (cloth tabs) and the right knee lever raises the dampers. The strings are mostly original, as fitted at Finchcocks. It has an excellent quality frame-and-panel lid in solid walnut.

This instrument has been fully serviced and repaired by Michael Cole. It was very carefully used by its former owners, and has very few marks, and those hardly visible. The soundboard developed two small cracks some years ago: these have been carefully repaired and should give no further cause for concern. The treble hammers (17 notes) were re-covered some years ago, but have now been re-covered a second time with matching buff leather. The mechanism has been adjusted for a more even response.
This instrument stands well in tune, and is currently playing at A=430. It has been used in numerous concerts with period instrument ensembles, most recently in concertos by CPE Bach and Mozart (K414).
Dimensions: 83" x 38", keyboard height 28".
